Karl Wiig coined KM concepts already in 1986 and
wrote one of the first book about KM.
Once I asked him, about how did hi start to interest about KM. Here is a fragment of his answer:
"In 1984 in my AI group (of over 40 professionals with backgrounds in AI, Computer Science, Psychology, Philosophy, Management Science, Anthropology, Lingusitics, etc.) we became concerned about the failure rate of over 100 expert systems that we had installed with clients. Due to the diverse background of my group, we started to look at the role knowledge plays in work and therefore, in business from many perspectives and became convinced that we needed a broader view and understanding of knowledge-related processes in organizations. That quyickly resulted in the concern that we needed to find systematic and explicit approaches to manage knowledge-related processes and we called that "KnowledgeManagement." "
