I don't know if it's really related to your requirements, but the first thing it occurred to me to think it's the ABB attempt to share the experience of their old/nearly retired managers with the rest of the company, creating ABB consulting, run by these elder fellows. They could therefore feel still useful and valued and their insight got transferred to youth/ X Generation...This ABB's strategy is outlined in the German book "KM: building blocks to success".
There are other strategies described such as "exit-interviews" and mentoring. Exit-interviews are not really effective, as they can not capture all the experience and the so-called tacit knolwedge of people; mentoring can be a powerful instrument and it's commonly used by consulting firms, which usually arrange groups composed from both junior and senior consultants. I remember Sveiby's description of a Swedish financial newspaper, which was always sending groups with numerous beginner to attend important interviews to plan the succession of journalist in a spontanous way (you can read the whole story and analysis in his dissertation available on-line in Sveiby's site...
