Hi Akhil,
I agree there's sometimes kind of arrogance toward India and other asian countries...Actually I do think all the countries (Europe, Asia, Africa, America) might learn somebody looking at other parts of the world. Moreover, I don't understand how one can say somebody is illiterate just because he doesn't speak English. You (I don't know whether or not you're Indian, but I will suppose so) could say I'm illiterate because I don't speak Indian and I don't know Buddism, and your argument would sound perfectly understandable and perfectly right. The only thing which puzzles me is your final statement. Actually I don't think we can generalize "West individualist/ East collectivist". I think this is kind of stereotype and stereotypes may be dangerous. I think there are collectivist and individualist both in the West and in the East. As far as I know (feel comfortable to correct me if I'm wrong, I don't know so much about India) there are many different "ethnic" groups, therefore speaking about a unified "Indian" culture may be actually wrong. This is not typical of India, even here in Italy there are many subcultures and differences between the North and the South. When I was abroad everybody was a little surprised: "You don't seem Italian", because the image of Italians abroad is the stereotype delivered by movies, which is a little suitable (but only a little) for the south part of the country.
Kindest Regards
