Greetings Kimmo,

Interesting question.

Problems themselves are rather a narrow subset of the value exchanges that occur in personal / professional networks (as I'm sure you are aware). Pleople share and exchange news, gossip, communication to coordinate & self-organize, they offer and receive support, exchange ideas, request / offer help and solve problems.

A common dichotomy / taxonomy of 'problem' types is:
a) strategic vs. operational
b) technical vs. administrative
c) personal vs. work related
d) internal vs. external
e) urgent / immediate vs. longer term inquiry
f) small & trivial vs. important & pervasive

When mapping information flows it helps to look at: whose signature is needed to authorize, who supplies learning, who offers mentoring, who gets exception reports, who 'reports' to whom.

Social network analysis is an aspect of KM which does not receive sufficient attention IMO. Here are some notes & links

An interesting question is what do you have to change if you wish to switch from mapping information to mapping knowledge?
