Hello Mike!
I am not a frequent visitor to this area, but I do drop by.... And I was curious to find out how your attempts to fan the interest in KM panned out for you?
your questions, and the answers that you have received, ressonate with me -- you see, I have been practicing "stealth KM" for years now.
What is stealth KM? Simply put -- you analyze what is needed and sell the benefits of the individual components on the basis of ROI without using the terminology.
example? you don't do an intellectual capital audit, you get HR started on a survey to uncover the KSA and core competencies needed to fill the roles in the organization. HR not in your realm of influence? you start doing it in your own area and share the results with your manager and HR, explaining that you wanted to make sure that you had adequate resources to address your day-to-day responsibilities should you lose one or two people. Frame it as risk management -- something that everyone is far more concious of since 9.11.
Since you have an intranet, you can utilize a lot of pull technology. For example, Marketing came up with a whizz-bang incentive program that really generated the desired activities in customer service? Create a company newsletter and interview the manager who designed and implemented the program and post it on the intrantet.
The key is to turn co-workers and senior management into allies by letting them see the benefits. And after you have these elements in place, then go back and point out that you are already the point person for taking care of these things, so why not formalize the program [and the position] and call it KM?
