Yogesh wrote at the end of the last post: "What creates
more knowledge: structure or chaos (or more appropriately, the
edge of chaos)?" Isn't knowledge the application of
structure to chaos? The story of creation in the book of Genesis
is a beautiful metaphore for this. In the beginning was not
nothing but pure chaos. Through the course of seperation of
water, earth, light and dark, etc., and through the naming of
things, the world arises.In a more pragmatic sense, Paulo Friere, wrote extensively on
the importance of the student's power to name and to create
meaning for him or herself. When we docilely accept or are forced
through ideology to accept a system or methodology, we are
severly restricted in our capacity to create and invent. Friere's
most famous essay is probably "The Banking Method of
Education".It's worth a look.
