In Innovation a new process or product is not considered valuable or sucesssfull unless it can be duplicated.
Surely best practice is the duplication of knowledge gained in a specific segment. This best practice is not stagnant nor is it inflexible. In many organisations this is adapted or incrementally innovated to fit the particular organisation.
Perhaps your experiences of best practice is different, however I have found it an ever evolving creature who changes according to the practice of others.
Of course the larger the base of users the more difficult to change the minds of other users but this is the same in anything and only a nature of human interaction.(which will never change)
Without best practice, you have a more stimulating environment with heightened innovation but little transfer of knowledge and less productivity. Unfortunatly many believe they are leaders but few prove to be worthy of the title.
I personally believe best practice is a method of transfer of knowledge and before you throw it away you need to provide an alternative. Particularly one that will provide a "real world" alternative and not just a "wouldnt it be nice if" alternative.
