Was your peptalk focusing on YOUR (organizations) ambitions and goals or was it focused on their needs and motives? Were you waving a stick or a carrot (and by the way, do they like carrots?)?
In my humble opinion you manage IT professionals in the same way you manage other professionals (say lawyers): you will need align the organizational goals and their individual goals and needs.
State the goals, ask them what they think of them? How would they achieve them? Steer on output, not throughtput. Make them accessories to the solution!
