Dave,
Templates:
Keep it simple and mainly freeform. Here is a mininal 'topic' list:Name
Contact information
Interests
Learning desires
Areas where I would like to mentor, teach or particiapte in a community
Personal networksEncourage particpants to include a photograph and to link to a formal resume rather than publishing it on the main page. You should have 'reply box' or functionality similar to QuickTopic which supports engagement and conversation. I discourage long descriptions of past history and details of past education achievements.
Formal structured interviews have not worked for me, I suspect this because the exercise becomes very stereotyped rather than being driven from interest and a genuine desire to connect. People often tell you what they believe the 'organization' needs or wishes to hear, rather than what drives them and what they are really interested in. A different (and more valuable?) view emerges from a dialog or conversation around contact points and a simple homepage. Weblogs can be a useful alternative here allowing individuals to post on topics thay feel passionate about, to 'float' ideas and to receive feedback.
Thanks for your interest. This has been a useful exchange.
