Dave,
Search engines:
This is a complex issue, it depends on how far the organization has moved towards a stable taxonomy, if you need to match keywords or concepts, if you wish to cluster based on similarity scores, the amount of structure you have in the web pages and the extent of atomated meta-tagging you intend to implement. Briefly, if you have a strong, stable organizational taxonomy use Semio, if you are matching based on similarity use Autonomy, if you need a general purpose engine use Verity. Costs vary depending on platform and seats but you will seldom get away under $25k. Public domain search engines will not do the trick IMO.My approach does not use any formal data collection there is a policy requirement for individuals to complete and maintain a personal homepage on the intranet, there are templates, examples and helpis available to get this done, there are reminders and the homepage is part of the annual review process. The firm size varies from less than 100 to more than 20k. Homepages were not mandatory in all locations or even within every department. The maximum time period was 6 months. There were exception reports generated that allowed supervisors to track compliance.
IMO = In My Opinion
Results with some of the auto-profilers have not been very promising (I have looked at Organik, Tacit, Autonomy and Askme). The web publishing software has varied from Domino, Frontpage, to Websphere, I even did one in Wiki. You do not need a fancy auto-profiler to do yellowpages, in fact I would advise against going down that track until you have developed a stable taxonomy for activities, competencies, roles, responsibilities and authorites and you have a firm wide meta-directory system e.g. LDAP
