Here are some notes that I trust may prove useful to you
In my experience, a loose, informal, emergent 'conversation' style, multimedia intranet homepage approach, combined with a powerful search engine and navigation map, works better than a formal up-front fixed field database design. The key is allowing interaction and personal interests to drive the process. Valuable contact points are more likely to be found around current passions, personal networks and hobbies than past education or projects.
