If Your Question Is: "I Want to Know More About....", use the following data mining strategy to make full use of BRINT's multi-faceted search facilities that process dynamically updated information. You can use either a DIRECTORY strategy or a METASEARCH strategy, each of which is explained below. Try each of these out to get a feel for what works for the topics that you are interested in... If you are in a hurry, just scroll down to the METASEARCH strategy as it is more efficient for quick hits. But, the DIRECTORY strategy is more suited for more targeted hits.
DIRECTORY Data Mining Strategy[A] Start with the BRINT.com home page and scan the menu of three rows titled 'Channels', 'Resources' and 'Community', which is available on most web pages within the BRINT web sites:
Channels: General Business · Business Technology · E-Business · Knowledge Management
Resources: News · Discussions · Conferences · Careers · e-Zine · Analyses · Books ·
Community: Join the Network!· Talk & Chat· Sponsored Events · Executive JobsIf you are new to BRINT or have not been a 'power user' of BRINT for a while, familiarize yourself by clicking on each of the above menu options so that you get a feel of what you can expect in each of the above options - gateways to most information that you need to find are available in the above DIRECTORY structure as well as the METASEARCH engine available through the Search form on any of the web pages.
The middle column of the BRINT.com home page also provides an overview of the key sections of the site, each section in turns provides an overview of the information areas available within it.
[B] A somewhat more detailed topical list for each of the 4 Channels - General Business, Business Technology, E-Business, and, Knowledge Management is available on the second menu of rows on the BRINT.com home page:
Business Directories, Industries, Accounting, Economics, Investing, Management, Law, Small Business, more,...
Technology Internet, Software, Hardware, Programming, Security, Open Source, Operating Systems, more,...
BizTech BPR, Organizational Learning, Complex Systems, Virtual Organizations, Intellectual Property, more,...
e-Business Strategy, e-Business, E-Commerce, ERP, CRM, Supply Chains, EAI, Wireless, Advertising, more...
Knowledge Management Strategy, Taxonomy, Analyses, Discussions, KEN, Conferences, Jobs, more,...
News Alerts Java, Linux, XML, WAP, CRM, Vortals, Portals, IPOs, Tech Stocks, Venture Capital, M & A, more,...[C] On the BRINT.com home page as well as most sectional pages, you will find in Right and Left margins NewsLinks and NewsFeeds on specific topics. Click on the newslinks which look like the following to get the latest headlines, including articles and news, on specific topics; this is what the newslinks look like:
BRINT Network News
Top Business News
Top Technology News
E-Commerce News
CRM News
Knowledge Management
Vertical Portals & B2B
Newsfeeds are available in the margins, and on some sectional pages in the lower part of the middle column, and you see them as bulleted lists of articles that are updated every few hours. On some pages, you also see the publication sources in which these articles have been published.
METASEARCHData Mining StrategyThere are two modes of drill-down search that I see on BRINT.
(i) The first is the global metasearch mode that you use by typing in the keywords separated by spaces in the FIND form in the left margin of BRINT.com home page and key Channels home page areas or in the SEARCH form on most of the web pages in the top menu area (perhaps, this is an inconsistency that will be resolved over the next versions of BRINT portals):
AND
(ii) The second mode is to use more targeted search for specific sections, I see one available in the BRINT Forums area called Knowledge Management Think Tank which looks like:
Use the General MetaSearch or specific search modes which is relevant to the area that you are trying to find information about. The specific search, such as the Forums search, does not need further explanation.
The General Metasearch mode is a very powerful mode of finding dynamically updated information that is available on the Web - you can find continuously updated information that is compiled from some of the most powerful:
- General Purpose directories and Search Engines,
- News feeds of latest articles, news and information,
- Jobs from latest updates in many online Jobs Databases,
- Discussions from latest updates in many online Forums,
- Books from updated databases on the Web
- Auctions from updated online Auction Web Sites
Once, you type in the search keywords in the search form and hit Enter key or 'Go' icon, you will see a Global MetaSearch WebPage. I will explain the search and data mining techniques using the example of 'XML' as the keyword, but you can apply the same strategy to virtually any other word or combinations of words separated by spaces. I type XML in the search form and here is what I get; click on the link to see the page:
BRINT Global MetaSearch on 'XML' You see Category links and Web Pages links under each of these you can browse through the directories of links to find the information that you need to find. This is just the tip of the iceberg as you can alternativly (IMPORTANT, PLEASE PAY ATTENTION) use the hyperlinks listed after the label in Red Related Searches:, these are some of the most powerful data mining search interfaces, therefore please make sure to check these out. Currently you see the following options in front of the Related Searches: label:
Related Searches:[ Meta Search]
[ News ]
[ Books ]
[ Jobs ]
[ Discussion Forums ]
[ Auctions ]
Here is what each of the above Related Searches: gets you by compiling information from the best sources on the Net:
[ Meta Search]
Continuously updated information from the most powerful directories and search engines on the Net - one place to find compiled information from general purpose directories and search engines including AltaVista, DirectHit, Excite, Fast/All the Web, Yahoo, and other engines and directories as they are added to the list.
Latest articles, news, and other updates crawled from the most interesting newspapers, magazines, information portals, research journals, and updated every couple of hours. One place to find focused and continously updated articles - articles as recent as those published in the last few hours - from some of the best sources on the Web!
Continuously updated books, articles and chapters, and other publications from the Amazon.com bookstores filtered by the specific keywords for your information. There are also a number of full-text books featured on BRINT.com web portals, besides hundreds of latest and continuously updated articles and in-depth research reports produced by BRINT, some of which are accessible in the Books section and others in the special sections discussed earlier under Channels areas of General Business, Business Technology, E-Business, Knowledge Management.
Continuously Updated Jobs and Position descriptions for USA-based as worldwide employers based upon your keyword search. How you can focus and expand your search for a specific position, say for instance, if you are interested in knowing about those positions in a specific Country, City or State, is discussed in an earlier article which you may read to see if you need more targeted or broad search for jobs or positions.
Continuously Updated Discussions and Newsgroups articles compiled from various sources that are relevant to your search. You will also find a number of discussions in these areas related to your research and job posting messages depending upon the specific areas of interest.
Continuously Updated Information from online Auctions that you can pull from the Web.
Enjoy! And have fun finding what you need to find. If there are specific issues related to searching through the above strategies, I welcome other users inputs and solutions helpful to our online colleagues.
[Perhaps, this will provide the starting point for developing a User's Guide to Making Full Use of BRINT for finding data, information and knowledge that you are interested in. BK, are you listening. I know you had said that you are waiting for the stabilization of next generation of services that you are planning to launch, but thought this may be a helpful contribution.]
