I would say that a University as in any other branch or type of organization has multiple areas of commitment.
One could differ that the core competency of the university as a type of organization, some say is to "spread knowledge" others to "create knowledge" and even others to "acumulate knowledge", but nevertheless any university needs all of them to exist.
But, and there´s a big but, which is the core of your University that make it able to survive and develop? To handle relationships with ex-students?
To make medical research? agriculture? KM?A "guru" figure isn't practical without a whole infra and suprastructure to support and project it. And some times a "guru" can be mantained in that status without "upgrading their knowledge base" significantly, but by good relationships.
Be careful, to support the consultancy prestige of a university in a "guru" is like letting the whole baseball team responsibility go to Barry Bonds, in the end all the team has to be an excellent team to go win the World Series.
Like the Big Five, a complete team of highly skilled and competent professionals can be more efective than one guru, or even a lot of them, check the case of Lucent Technologies.
