I think any boundary in Knowledge is mere encapsulation to allow it the property of possible inheritance(ie it is a boudary of convenience not limitation). Linking threads together may cause you to create knowledge about a complex issue which may have escaped you if you had to build it from scratch. This is true even if you do not use all of the contents you may have inherited through linking the threads. This process is very analogous to current concepts within IT of object programming. On the concept of latent thread going active: it would be nice if an "agent" could email someone when after let's say 30 days there a "response to a response". Or like in Louts Notes you could have multiple views of a discussion (date, topic, active threads, etc).
Relative to your senior scholar; my "real world" observations lead me to believe interdisciplinary teams have higher success rates. This forum is a good example. I have no idea the discipline of the participants, but cannot say enough about the knowledge concepts I see get framed.
