What is there about KM that makes you feel that this is an absolutely fabulous area to be interested and/or involved in?

When I first heard and read about this field a few years ago, I just knew it was something in which I wanted to be involved. I have always been interested in how the information we generate can be made available to more people. I did my Ph.D. as a combination of artificial intelligence (expert systems) and chemical engineering.

The ideas described by thought leaders in the field make me very excited. How can we pass on our understanding of topic X to other people? The idealistic descriptions of the field fit my thinking like a glove.

Question: What is there about KM (theory, practice, people, process etc) that makes you really cringe with embarrassment?

The fact that "Knowledge Management" brings a snicker or a raised eyebrow from most people to whom I try to describe this passion.

I am alternately embarrassed and excited to be in a field that is so heavily dependent on organizational cohesiveness, when the market barely allows organizations the time to unify before tearing them apart again. The excitement comes from the understanding that the techniques we discuss will help organizations weather the storm. The embarrassment comes from the inability of people to pick up their heads long enough to have a looks at the big picture.
