Well Martyn,
You make a good point, way too many companies are drowning in ERP / CRM / SCM data, but lack the vision and the competencies to turn this flood into insights, forecasts and hypotheses to test.But this is hardly knowledge management, until we start to reflect on the algorithms we use, and critique the business rules generated or the customer segments produced. I assume you have read the article by Tom Davenport etal "Data to Knowledge to Results. Building an analytical capability" in California Management Review Winter 2110 43 92) 117-138. This adresses your question in a very eloquent fashion.
