Of course, the relationship depends on the company implementing both initiatives, but I can provide a perspective of one of our customers.
This customer based in Toronto leverages our product, AskMe Enterprise (which enables employees to find eachother, share information, and find tacit knowledge), in part as a tool to improve the training of their employees on their new IT system they're rolling.
The company already has e-learning software, which organized classes and schedules and sign-ups on the web. But they were able to use AskMe to provide more "just-in-time" learning. For example:
- Even after the class, a student could ask the teach a question.
- Before taking the class, a potential student could learn about the teacher, see some of the answers given by the teacher, and then make a better determination if the class would be a good use of his/her time.
- Teachers could have a category on AskMe dedicated to each class, where they could store a list of Frequently Asked Questions (Teachers, perhaps more than any other, benefit a lot from not having to answer the same questions twice.)
- When there was a new teach to the class, that teacher was able to see some of the common questions asked, some of the recent issues raised, which prepared him for the experience of teaching new students. So I do believe there is a strong relationship between KM and Training. It's up to companies to find that relationship and best leverage it.
