Experience has demonstrated to me that KM & education, or training is closely linked.
The successful distribution of knowledge to a community, via chats, conference calls, on-line demonstrations can increase awareness beyond the reference to documented intellectual capital.
This is one common synergy between "training" and KM. The distribution of knowledge via the community (as above) can help other people in the community attain a basic skill level.
From here, there is some extentions to the point made by Denham. If the interest level in the community interventions increases this can become a key indicator for more formal / structured enablement to further development the skill level.
'hope this helps somewhat
