Greetings Chandrasekar,
Interesting question. Here is how I see things:
Training:
Focus on acquistion of immediate, individual skills and competencies, meeting task and activity specific objectives, strong emphasis on assessment, testing and certification. Training is performance based. Happens in response to clearly articulated needs and gaps, e.g. introduction of new technology. Training is structured instruction with an emphasis on memorization, task achievement and increased efficiency. Training tends to address "how to get it done", rather than "if we need to really do this and why and if there is an alternative way"Knowledge management:
Emphasis on self, continuous and double loop learning, awareness, responsiveness, collaboration, innovation. Practices are around dialog, reflection, distinctions, capture of good practice and lessons learned. KM is a more holistic approach, with attention to relationships, learning from diverse sources (customers, competition, stake holders) and learning from cohorts rather than subject matter experts. There is far more attention to social and co-operative learning in KM and gaps tend to be identified by the group rather than by a hierarchy.Where does KM & training meet?
eLearning, in particular, where this is facilitated and community based, is one area. There is a trend to move away from directed training (push model) towards community learning (pull) where knowledge is co-created and shared through conversations, mentoring at the work face and new insights are validated by peers. There has recently been some excellent conversations about training vs. learning on the ASTD lists where this is recurrent theme.
Hope this helps
