Why would you implement KM?

This is kind of a continuation of Jerome Peloquin's thread below. I am in agreement that profit, bottom line, return on investment, etc is THE big factor of KM implementation. I mean, how else are you going to sell it to upper management?
On the same note, how can you "data mine" without some target whether it's customer loyalty / satisfaction, increasing sales / productivity, educational usage, etc. All of these translate into increased profits or increased personal knowledge to earn more money.
Unless I'm missing some KM "sect" that blindly gathers knowledge just to have and horde it.
