Sue,

You mention the idea stream (flow) and talk of critical mass. Dorothy Leonard points to another ingredient for your pond, the need for 'creative abrasion' i.e. cognitive diversity and constant conversation. It is possible to maintain this through idea churn (flow) or through people churn but there must be some stasis (balance) between these to grow the connecting links. This equates to the trust in our communities. A high level of trust, the 'freedom' to explore and expose your identity to new ideas & alter your mental models is an essential ingredient. This requires time, commitment and constancy of participants. So its not just constancy of mass its lower churn and greater connectness that delivers the goods. Liked your analogy BTW.
