CREATING TOOLS FOR KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT7. CONCLUSION
After studying existing and emerging technologies and their application to knowledge management it becomes evident that while their usefulness is growing, there is much room for improvement. Issues such as tacit knowledge sharing, creativity, and innovation represent fundamental challenges but one with great rewards. The application of technology to those issues, and frameworks to support their adoption within the enterprise, have the potential for dramatically improving the business value chain.
Study of the nature and benefits of knowledge management technology will continue as long as it holds value. The progress of the companies that were studied for this paper will continue along with research into new technologies as they emerge. It is expected that many new solutions will enter the marketplace during the next decade and that they may appear quite different to those in this investigation.
As computer-based systems evolve from isolated functional support systems to interactive knowledge-support systems there appears to be room for a variety of approaches that technology developers could take. Markets that embrace sophisticated tools to meet real needs are simply part of an ongoing relationship between humans and the tools we create. Such tools are the next step in automating and manipulating information effectively to add value to human endeavors. By building on past and present knowledge we re-create the future in ěreal time.î
