"The `CN 40' account for almost 50% of worldwide management consulting market," says CN managing editor Tom Rodenhauser. "But we're seeing a greater disparity between the largest and smallest firms on our list the drop-off in 1995 revenues was almost $2.45 billion from #1 to #40 on our list, a full $1 billion more than in 1990. That indicates a few mega-firms will battle for title of largest management consultancy. On the other hand, up-and-coming boutique consultancies will probably have greater opportunity to crack the list."
Andersen Consulting clearly tops this year's ranking, posting management consulting fees of more than $2.5 billion (Consultants News doesn't count outsourcing and/or systems implementation fees in its rankings). Of the top 10 firms, only McKinsey & Co. and Booz-Allen & Hamilton fit the "classic" management consulting definition. The consulting divisions of five of the Big Six accounting firms also rank among the top tier.
It's clear that firms able to leverage strong implementation divisions with strategy particularly relating to IT are thriving. Other findings/trends: Mega firms offering one-stop, complete consulting services will battle for dominance at the top. Andersen Consulting is clearly the model in this category. Likely to join the fray: AT Kearney and IBM Consulting.
The Big Six will continue to round out top ten lists, but pressures to join in the mega-firm battles may lead to further consolidation (possibly to a Big Four within five years?).
The death knell for traditional strategy firms is clearly overstated. But it's apparent that firms such as McKinsey & Co. (#2), Boston Consulting Group (#14), Bain & Co. (#18) cannot ignore implementation if they are to sustain high growth.
Reengineering's cost-cutting persona (which is eroding its popularity) is also forcing process-oriented firms like Gemini (#15) and Proudfoot (#31) to reconsider their position in the market. Consultants with stopwatches are no longer in vogue. Clients are now demanding "growth" strategies.
